CENTRAL OFFICE TECHNICIAN

Responsible for installing and maintaining all central office equipment system-wide, including power equipment, subscriber line remotes, carrier equipment, emergency generators, and all other associated central office equipment. Performs routine testing and maintenance procedures on the equipment. To plan and assist in the installation of all the equipment listed above system-wide. Maintains a stock of all necessary spare cards as well as maintaining current backups for all equipment in their field of expertise. Produces detailed network designs as requested.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Routinely tests central office equipment daily, system-wide.
  • Installs and maintains all central office equipment, subscriber line remotes, carrier equipment, emergency generators, and all other associated central office equipment. Performs maintenance procedures on the equipment as needed.
  • Installs and maintains COAX Cable Headend equipment.
  • Installs and maintains DSLAM’s, and other internet related equipment, system-wide.
  • Installs and maintains all special service circuits including (Metro Ethernet, T3, T1, 64K, 56K, Analog Data, etc.).
  • Installs and maintains power equipment system-wide, including items such as rectifiers, batteries, fuse panels, and inverters
  • Assists in maintaining overall integrity of the system’s network.
  • Requisitions and maintains an adequate stock of spares for maintenance purposes.
  • Informs the Director – Network Remote Operations on the progress of current projects.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of fiber equipment as needed.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of Adtran Dacs equipment as needed.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of LAN/WAN equipment as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining toll, EAS, WATS, and special services as requested.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of Timing equipment, system-wide.
  • Attends schools, training classes, and seminars as requested.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of SS7 equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A two-year degree in the electrical field is desired. Related work experience may be determined to be equivalent.
  • Employee must have satisfactorily completed training in basic electricity and electronics.  Employee should also be familiar with SONET equipment as well as DLC’s.
  • Employee should have knowledge of TCP/IP issues and terminology, as well as knowing color codes for cable related issues and installs.
  • Employee must have a comprehensive understanding of TDM technology.
  • A knowledge of SONET, Transmission, DLC’s, DACS, IP, Timing and Video must be acquired through job training and vendor schools.
  • Able to lift up to eighty pounds is required. Employee must climb ladders. Pulling, stretching, and bending are required.
  • Good verbal communication skills are necessary
  • A valid Driver's License is required
  • Safety practices must be understood and observed
  • Employee must work with other departments and offices within the organization and must use tact and patience to ensure good working relationships.
